The Snowy River “Reflections of a River” centers on community concerns about the state of The Snowy River and the way governments have been managing the river system.

The beauty and importance of this river cannot be over stated… it is Australia’s only true montane river running from directly below Australia’s highest mountain.. Mt Kosciuszko to the sea at Marlo in Victoria.

Prior to the dams being built the river was known for it’s huge spring flows and the drainage basin around Marlo is regarded as the second most fertile country in the world. Only the Nile River basin is more fertile.

While most of the river runs through country that is largely uninhabited, the majority being protected by the Snowy River National Park, it’s flow was drastically reduced to less than 1% when the construction of The Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme was completed in the 1970′s.

Today the river is but a shallow of it’s former self.free counters

It’s significance to Australian folk lore due to Banjo Patterson’s poem – The Man from Snowy River – establishes The Snowy River as a important part of our national identity.
